BC Patients and Survivors wanted!

I’m looking to connect with any breast cancer patients or survivors. I live in Milford, Connecticut. I’m 15 minutes west of New Haven, 75 minutes east of New York City, 45 minutes south of Hartford and 2 hours southeast of Boston.

I’m also interested in getting some help with a fundraising garage/yard sale I will be hosting August 25th & 26th. I’m looking for people (within driving distance) who are interested in getting rid of any sellable stuff that might just be taking up space. I am also looking for people that can help me advertise or spread the word on the event.

The 1 in 10 theory has been proven!!

A little over 48 hours ago I posted “For every 10 people I ask, at least 1 makes a donation!” and as of right now it’s had 45 views and I’ve received 4 new donations!

I know there are lots of people asking for donations for many worthy causes. You have your Relay for Life, Revlon Walk/Run, Susan B. Komen Foundation and many others. All are amazing organizations that do wonderful things for so many people. I wanted to share why I am asking you to support the Avon Foundation.

It was April 30th, 2006 my hair was growing back stronger than ever, I was back at work and feeling great. I had just spent the weekend in New York City for my son’s 11th birthday. We were headed back home on Metro-North train. We had just spent 2 days taking in the sites, saw Blue Man Group for the 2nd time and we got AMAZING 3rd baseline seats to a Yankees game. Cancer was the farthest thing from my mind.

In between head nods my eye caught this advertisement with a women who didn’t look much older than me (I was 28) wearing a bright pink hat that said SURVIVOR on it. She had tears in her eyes and her arms raised in victory. It said “Good things come to those who walk.” It showed the dates of walks in various cities, one of which was New York City. The date for the event in NYC would fall on my one year “cancer free” anniversary!

As soon as I got home I logged onto the Avon Foundation website to check it out. One of the things that first hit me was that if you do decide to register as a walker you are required to raise at least $1800. I thought to myself why would a non-profit want to limit themselves to only those who would commit to raising that kind of money? The goal of the Avon Walk is to raise as much money as possible to provide access to care and fund research leading to a cure for breast cancer. While other organizations might have more people involved with a lower fundraising commitment (or no fundraising at all), the Walk is organized so that a manageable number of people can participate in the weekend while simultaneously yielding a high amount of donations going to the cause. The complexity of the Avon Walks requires a structure different than other events of a shorter distance or time.

So I signed up! I’m that last person that meets personal goals such as excercise, weight loss or individual milestones. I lack focus sometimes. So what better way to approve upon my inability to commit to something then to worry about spending $1800 of my own money?!

So help me meet my goal by helping others in the process. Please understand that I am working hard for your donations. I’ve made a commitment and I’ve left myself no room for indecisiveness or laziness.

Ask yourself “What did you do today to help cure cancer?”

For every 10 people I ask, at least 1 makes a donation!

Do you know ten people that you could tell about the Avon Foundation and my commitment to walk over 39 miles over 2 days? The 1 out 10 stat above is great but there is a catch. For every person I email it takes at least 2 subsequent follow up emails before they make a donation.
